Abstract Mixed Media Seascape Painting "Ocean Blue" by Colorado Artist Carol Nelson

This painting has lots of texture and a watery feel.  Parts of the painting were poured areas of color that were allowed to flow together, creating beautiful color harmony.

This painting arrives ready to hang in a horizontal or vertical orientation.

"Ticket to Ride" 30x40 mixed media painting by Carol Nelson

This is a remake of an older painting I never really loved, so I gave it new life. There is a lot of texture with molding paste, tyvek, and corrugated paper.

The color palette is one of my favorites: Dioxazine Purple, Quin Nickel Azo Gold, and Quin Magenta. Of course there's some other colors in there too, but those are the big three.

Abstract mixed media collage landscape, "Sonoran Sunset" © Carol Nelson Fine Art

"Sonoran Sunset"  12x36 inches, by Carol Nelson

This is a multi-textured collage made using my "sandwich technique." I have a giant plastic bag of left over scraps of materials left over from other projects. There are also pieces of torn sandwiches from other projects.

When I was thinking about making this painting, I went looking for my bag of leftover scraps. It was nowhere to be found! Suddenly I remembered that the day before my cleaning lady had been picking up in my studio.

I ran in to the garage and looked in the trash can - yup, there was my bag of stuff. I can't blame her. It was laying on the floor of my studio, and looked for all the world like a bag of trash. Whew. Any mixed media artist has bags and boxes and containers full of the same kind of stuff. It looks like discarded trash, but it's the building blocks of future paintings!

This vibrant abstract has many papers collaged into it.  The main vertical column of papers, slightly right of center, is made using my "sandwich technique", which I teach in workshops around the country, and on my video, "New Approaches to Mixed Media Materials."

Geometric abstract, "A Scattering of Red" © Carol Nelson Fine Art

"A Scattering of Red", 24x24 inches, by Carol Nelson

You would think a geometric abstract would be easy to pull off, but I struggled with this one. Originally, I had some large circular elements in the design.

After looking at the painting hanging on the wall for a month, I finally decided the circles had to go. That meant a substantial rework of several areas was needed.

It's just a fact that not all paintings flow off the easel easily. Some require the artist to struggle through several adaptations of her original concept before a satisfactory painting emerges. Often times, just identifying what's not working is the hardest part.

I consider myself to be an experienced painter, and painting problems STILL happen every once in a while. For more information about this painting, click here to go to my website.

Abstract Mixed Media Art Painting "OPERETTA, 12017" by Colorado Mixed Media Abstract Artist Carol Nelson

This painting gets it's name from the musical symbols printed in the piece.  There are textural elements as well, such as Egyptian papyrus paper, printed papers, and strips of painted watercolor paper.
The close color harmony of the palette, primarily metallic tones of copper and bronze, with a touch of lavendar and red oxide, makes this painting soothing.  The dramatic value (dark vs. light) shifts make it a dynamic piece.
